Gastech 2026: Asia will become more reliant on neighbours for energy, says Petronas CEO

Asia is likely to become more reliant on neighbouring countries and long-term partners for its energy needs as concerns over energy security push the region towards greater self-sufficiency, according to Petronas President and CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik. Speaking to CNA’s Roland Lim at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Taufik says this will make Asia more regionalised rather than reliant on a global ecosystem. Meanwhile, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg says ASEAN needs common rules and agreement on power pricing to enable greater electricity interconnection, as the Malaysian state seeks to expand renewable electricity exports across the region.
