Sudanese engineer leaves Uganda to help rebuild his war-torn country

For engineer Jamal Mubarak, the choice to leave Uganda and return to Sudan is driven by hopes of rebuilding his country and helping his children resume their education. Jamal fled his home in Khartoum, travelled to Al-Jazira and then crossed into South Sudan before reaching Uganda by land. He says Uganda provided safety and became a second home, but despite having 34 years of engineering experience, he was unable to find work. Now, he believes parts of Sudan are safe enough for his family to return, despite knowing that conditions will not be as they were before the war. He hopes to find work repairing and rebuilding infrastructure damaged by the conflict, while giving his children the opportunity to return to school.
