Sudan’s currency collapses as war sends food prices soaring

The Sudanese pound has lost more than 90 percent of its value since war broke out between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023. The currency collapse has contributed to soaring prices for basic goods, putting food and other essentials beyond the reach of many families. The Central Bank’s decision to float the pound has added further pressure, while Sudan’s heavy reliance on imported goods means many businesses must pay for supplies in hard currency. Families living on fixed salaries describe having to drastically reduce spending on essentials, including food, milk and cooking oil. Shop owners are also struggling as the cost of importing goods rises and consumers have less money to spend. The economic crisis is compounding the devastating humanitarian consequences of Sudan’s war, which has displaced millions of people and disrupted livelihoods across the country.
