Paris protest over cost of living turns tense as police fire tear gas at some demonstrators

On the sidelines of a protest in Paris, French riot police battled with some demonstrators. As officers moved in to disperse the crowd, some people ran for cover, and police used tear gas and stun grenades. The unrest came after an otherwise peaceful demonstration in the French capital against the rising cost of living. Thousands took to the streets, including public sector workers, among them a trainee nurse who says French hospitals are abandoned and need money. Students also joined the march after more than a month of protests outside high schools and universities, demanding a better education system. The government wants to restore calm and end the protests. But with trade unions calling for a nationwide strike and further demonstrations next week, that seems unlikely to happen soon.
