New Zealand’s general election has no clear winner, with just over 99% of ballots counted. The governing National Party and Labour have both secured 29% of the vote, and the Opportunity Party has reached the 5% threshold to enter Parliament, so it could be a kingmaker. Cost of living, unemployment and healthcare were major issues. Peter Dunne, a former MP and minister in both National and Labour governments, says it is mainly a cost-of-living election, and asks which main bloc is better placed to ease the burden. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says his bloc has a pathway to forming government, and that, on today’s numbers, it is highly unlikely he will need Opportunity; he believes National can govern with New Zealand First and ACT once special votes are counted. He wants more cross-party collaboration on AI, infrastructure and social media bans.
