Zelensky urges Trump for stronger Russia sanctions, calls for peace talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on September 11 that the United States must impose stronger sanctions against Russia, emphasizing the need for decisive action from U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelensky also indicated that Ukraine must engage in peace talks with Moscow to end the ongoing war.

In an interview, Zelensky said, "Strong decisions from the U.S. President's administration are crucial. Personal decisions from President Trump are also very much desired." He also called for the U.S. Congress to pass a Russia sanctions bill, originally spearheaded by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. Zelensky highlighted the bill's importance, stating, "We need to pass, vote for, and support this law."

However, Democratic Representatives Don Beyer, Gregory Meeks, and Richard Neal issued a joint statement condemning the legislation. They argued that the bill would not mandate sanctions against Russia and would grant Trump additional authority over tariffs.

Zelensky also addressed the need for Ukraine to find ways to engage with Moscow, focusing on peace talks. He suggested moving "step by step" toward that goal, potentially through truces and prisoner exchanges, especially if Russia continues to refuse a ceasefire. "If it is difficult to find a direct approach, then at least we need to move step by step. We need to unblock the Black Sea and find a way to achieve an energy truce, where the energy infrastructure of both countries is protected," Zelensky said.

He further stated that Ukraine would "respond appropriately to Russian attacks" if civilian infrastructure continues to be targeted. "Russia knows that if they attack, and they are preparing to attack our energy system this winter, they will receive the same in return," Zelensky warned.
