President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, according to a Ukrainian official. The decision follows a meeting discussing military challenges, including mobilization. Fedorov's future role remains unclear.
The dismissal of a key defense minister during wartime raises questions about Ukraine's military leadership stability and its ability to address critical challenges like mobilization and air defense, particularly as Russia continues its offensive.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, according to a Ukrainian official familiar with the matter. The decision comes after a meeting between Zelensky, Fedorov, and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, where key military challenges, including mobilization and air defense shortages, were discussed. Zelensky stated that the priority is for the army and the Defense Ministry to be "united" and "on the same page."
Fedorov, 35, had served as Defense Minister for six months and was credited with transforming Ukraine's army through technology and data-driven strategies. However, his position had become uncertain, with some lawmakers reportedly raising concerns about his performance and the timing of any potential change. The broader cabinet overhaul, which also saw the departure of Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, aims for "renewal" amid ongoing Russian advances in the eastern Donetsk region.
It remains unclear whether Fedorov will be appointed to another role within the government or who will succeed him as defense minister. Parliament is scheduled to vote on the defense minister's position later in the week.
