Woman offers elderly neighbor a home as he ages

Julissa Gomez, a 28-year-old from Los Angeles, has cultivated a deep friendship with her 87-year-old neighbor, Delmar, over the past decade. Their relationship began when Gomez and her parents moved in next door to Delmar. After her father's death in 2020, Gomez and her husband took over the primary role of caring for Delmar, assisting with errands, prescriptions, and doctor's appointments. Delmar, whose own family lives far away, has become like family to Gomez and her husband. Inspired by their story, Gomez and Delmar co-authored a children's book, "The Friendship Next Door with Delmar," to encourage kindness and connection among neighbors. Gomez and her husband currently live with her disabled mother, and they are actively looking to purchase a home in the same neighborhood to remain close and continue providing care for both her mother and Delmar. Gomez has explicitly offered Delmar a place to live with them should he become unable to live independently, emphasizing that this is what family does.
