The U.S. government moved 12,267 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $1.01 billion, from a wallet associated with the 2016 Bitfinex hack on Thursday. Blockchain analytics firm Arkham identified the wallet as holding seized funds from the hack, which resulted in the theft of 119,756 BTC.
This significant transfer followed similar government activity on Wednesday, which included sending about $119 million in USDT and roughly 2,574 BTC to Coinbase Prime. While Coinbase Prime offers custody services, these transfers do not confirm a sale.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 directing forfeited Bitcoin into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve intended to avoid sales. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent later clarified that the government would explore budget-neutral ways to add to this reserve. The government's total holdings are estimated at around 306,795 BTC, worth approximately $24.85 billion at current market prices.
