Counterfeit beauty products seized across the UK have been found to contain dangerous substances including mercury, lead, and methanol, according to Trading Standards. The watchdog noted a rising problem with fake cosmetics, skincare, and perfumes, which are increasingly being sold by scammers. Tests revealed alarming levels of mercury in skincare, high lead content in makeup, and a toxic alcohol making up a significant portion of a counterfeit fragrance. These products bypass rigorous safety standards and accurate ingredient listing, posing serious risks to consumers. The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) is launching a campaign called Face the Fakes to raise awareness.
