UK airports are set to introduce a new contactless e-gate system that will allow passengers to pass through immigration without presenting their passport. The system, announced by the government, utilizes facial recognition technology to verify travelers' identities against immigration and travel records. Upon approaching the e-gate, a passenger's photo is taken and automatically checked. If verified, the barrier opens. Officials estimate this new technology to be up to 25% faster than traditional passport checks.
East Midlands Airport was the first to implement this new system on Tuesday. The Home Office has stated that the technology will be rolled out to all UK airports by early 2027. Passengers will still need to keep their passports with them in case further checks are required or if they are directed to a Border Force officer.
Phil Douglas, director general of Border Force, described the initiative as a benefit for travelers, enhancing journey speed while maintaining border security. Karen Dee, chief executive of Airports UK, welcomed the development, emphasizing the need for efficient borders. Steve Griffiths, managing director of East Midlands Airport, expressed delight at being the first to introduce the contactless e-gates, highlighting their commitment to a smoother passenger experience.
