U.S. President Donald Trump said on November 5, 2026 that a settlement over Ukraine would be a "big, beautiful agreement" reaching beyond that country, after meeting Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin's envoy, at a White House event hosted by First Lady Melania Trump.
Dmitriev heads the U.S.-sanctioned Russian sovereign wealth fund. The event was held for remarks by Melania Trump about the temporary ceasefire in Oleshky that she helped negotiate. Russian and Ukrainian officials attended, but Trump told reporters that evening he had met only Dmitriev. "I can't tell you what I discussed. But I'm just telling you, it's going to be a big agreement," he said. "It's going to involve more than Ukraine, and I could even say it might involve all of Europe." He added: "Everyone's gonna be thrilled."
On November 6, 2026, Trump's son-in-law and diplomatic envoy Jared Kushner said the president had discussed with several European leaders the need for "a broader European security architecture that can help establish the conditions for lasting peace." Kushner wrote on social media that the objective was to develop "practical arrangements that address the security concerns of all sides, reduce the risk of future conflict, and create a more stable and predictable security environment."
The comments came ahead of U.S.-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi involving Russian and Ukrainian officials on November 10-11. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
