Canada Rejects Trump's Renaming of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

Canadian officials have stated they will not recognize the lake's new name, which is intended for US federal use only. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded on X, asserting that Canadians will continue to refer to the lake by its historic name, Lake Ontario, which dates back over 400 years. He noted that the US is changing its trade relations, foreign policy, national monuments, and hydronyms.

The renaming occurs amid an escalating trade dispute between the US and Canada, following the US imposition of 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion in Canadian goods in August, which prompted retaliatory tariffs from Canada. This is not the first time the Trump administration has overseen name changes; in January 2025, the Gulf of Mexico was renamed 'Gulf of America,' and Denali was restored to its former federal name, Mount McKinley. The administration also reversed the Biden administration's renaming of nine Army bases named after Confederate leaders.
