Trump Nominates White House Aide Heidi Overton to Lead FDA

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is nominating Dr. Heidi Overton, a top White House aide, to lead the Food and Drug Administration. Overton, currently the deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, is a medical doctor who has been instrumental in developing and executing the administration's health care agenda.

In a Truth Social post, Trump lauded Overton as a "ROCKSTAR" who has worked closely with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on his top health priorities, emphasizing her ability to tackle difficult issues and deliver solutions. He stated that her leadership is needed at the FDA to maintain the U.S. as a global leader in scientific discovery and cures.

Overton previously served as the chief policy officer at the conservative America First Policy Institute before joining the Trump administration. Her nomination follows the resignation of the previous FDA commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary, in May, who stepped down amid pressure from the White House. Makary's tenure saw unfinished projects related to ultraprocessed foods, antidepressants, and COVID-19 vaccines.

The nomination is expected to lead to a high-stakes confirmation battle in the Senate's health committee. Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican, has already expressed deep skepticism regarding Overton's nomination, citing her support for an executive order aimed at overhauling the nation's childhood vaccine schedule. This follows a recent, narrowly confirmed nomination for the CDC director, which also faced delays due to vaccine policy concerns.
