The payments were made by Umar Kremlev, head of the International Boxing Association (IBA), through an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai, according to ProPublica, which cited records and interviews with three anonymous sources.
Trump Jr., the US president's eldest child, married Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson in a lavish three-day celebration. Kremlev reportedly footed the bill to rent one of the islands where a reception was held and guests slept, along with other large expenses, including a firework show.
Robert Garcia, the ranking member and lead Democrat on the House oversight committee, publicly questioned why a Russian oligarch close to Putin would fund Trump Jr.'s wedding and what was received in return. Kremlev has a longstanding relationship with Putin and heads the IBA, a body backed by the state-owned Russian energy company Gazprom. The Ukrainian government has imposed sanctions on Kremlev.
While the event was described as extravagant, the guest list was intimate, with about 50 people attending the party. Kremlev reportedly did not attend the private wedding ceremony itself, which had 18 guests, but was present with a large contingent of Russians at the post-wedding party.
In response to ProPublica's questions, a spokesperson for Trump Jr. did not deny the funding, stating Kremlev is a "personal friend" and not a business associate.
