Trump invites Putin to G20 summit in Miami, Rubio says

The Russian Foreign Ministry had not immediately responded to a request for confirmation regarding Putin's attendance. Such a visit would mark Putin's first in-person G20 appearance since 2019 and his second trip to the U.S. since Trump's return to office last year.

Russia's military actions in Ukraine continue, with forces reportedly hammering Kyiv with drones on Wednesday, resulting in at least two fatalities and damage to significant infrastructure sites. Rubio emphasized the importance of dialogue, stating, "If you only meet with people that you agree with, then these are very nice meetings but nothing happens. In order to solve problems, you have to meet with people that you disagree with or the people that you might have some issues with."

In recent weeks, Trump has publicly urged Ukraine to refrain from striking Russian oil refineries, attributing these attacks to a rise in global gas prices. Earlier in the month, the president announced an energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, though strikes on energy targets have persisted since then.

Putin's previous visit to the U.S. in August 2025 involved a meeting with Trump in Alaska, which was met with a red carpet and a handshake. However, that summit did not lead to peace in Ukraine, and Trump subsequently shifted his foreign policy focus.
