President Donald Trump has approved the death penalty by firing squad for Nidal Malik Hasan, the convicted terrorist responsible for the 2009 Ft. Hood shooting. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced the decision on X, stating that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the sentence, which Trump then approved.
Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in the attack while shouting "Allahu Akbar." He represented himself during his 2013 trial and stated that the evidence would show he was the shooter and that he apologized for any mistakes made in his endeavor to establish a perfect religion.
According to the Associated Press, at least 144 civilian prisoners have been executed by shooting since 1608. The most recent was Brad Sigmon last year, who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend’s parents in 2001 and chose the firing squad over the electric chair and lethal injection. Parnell stated that the Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of Hasan's execution.
