Sri Lankan police are actively searching for six individuals implicated in the suspected murder of a Chinese national, who is believed to be connected to computer-related scams and transnational fraud networks. This investigation is part of a broader crackdown that has resulted in the arrest of approximately 700 foreign nationals this year, including Indians, Chinese, Nepalis, and Vietnamese.
Authorities believe the victim was abducted in Colombo, Sri Lanka's commercial capital, and their body was recovered a week ago in Eheliyagoda. Police spokesman Frederick Wootler stated that three suspects believed to be within Sri Lanka have been placed under a travel ban. Additionally, three suspects who have left the country are being traced with the support of Interpol.
Two Chinese nationals connected to the murder have already been arrested and are scheduled to appear in court on August 4. Police sources indicated that the victim was likely part of a larger group of Chinese nationals involved in cybercrime operations. Nationwide raids have uncovered numerous mobile phones, laptops, and desktop computers, reinforcing the suspicion of ties to cybercrime networks. Most arrested individuals have been deported for visa violations or working on tourist visas.
The Chinese foreign ministry has expressed a willingness to enhance cooperation with countries to combat cross-border crime, while the Chinese embassy in Colombo has not yet responded to requests for comment.
