Typhoon Maysak has killed two people and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands in southern China's Guangxi province, with waters overflowing or breaking through barriers at three reservoirs. The storm, which previously affected Vietnam and China's Hainan island, is weakening as it moves inland.
In Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, about 55,000 people were already affected by floods, prompting authorities to raise the flood control emergency response to its highest level due to "extremely heavy rain." Further south in Guigang, floodwaters submerged cars and cascaded into a building site. Videos also showed a car being washed down a street in Fangchenggang.
Separately, five people died in heavy rains in northern China, including two in Inner Mongolia and three in Liaoning province. Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Bavi is approaching Taiwan with winds up to 180mph and is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to eastern China later in the week.
Meteorologists link China's growing threats from extreme weather to the climate crisis, with weather-related risks estimated to wipe out tens of billions of dollars in commercial activity annually.
