South Korean President Lee to attend UN General Assembly, meet Mexico's Sheinbaum

SEOUL, Sept 21 (Reuters) - South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to visit the United States and Mexico between September 21 and 27. During his trip, he will attend the UN General Assembly in New York and hold a summit with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City. The presidential Blue House announced the visit on Monday.

On the sidelines of the UN gathering, Lee is also pursuing meetings with leaders from the United States, Australia, and other nations. A potential meeting with US President Donald Trump is under consideration as Seoul and Washington continue negotiations on the specifics of South Korea's $350 billion investment package in the US, a key component of a trade deal established last year. South Korean officials indicated that discussions are ongoing, despite a postponement of a scheduled parliamentary briefing on the investment plans.

At the UN General Assembly, President Lee is slated to deliver a keynote address focusing on United Nations reform and present his vision for peace and coexistence on the Korean Peninsula. He is also scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Following his US visit, Lee will travel to Mexico City, arriving on Wednesday to meet with President Sheinbaum the following day. The summit will include a joint press conference and the signing of several memorandums of understanding. South Korea aims to enhance cooperation with Mexico in areas such as trade, energy, aerospace, and culture. The Blue House noted Mexico's significance as a major market for K-pop and identified opportunities for expanded defense cooperation as Mexico modernizes its military.
