South Korea to build semiconductor cluster in Gwangju

A military airport located in the southwestern city of Gwangju has been designated as the site for a significant semiconductor production cluster, according to a presidential official. The decision was finalized during a meeting involving government officials and top executives from leading chip manufacturers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. This initiative is a key component of the government's broader "three megaprojects" strategy, which focuses on substantial investments in semiconductors, physical artificial intelligence, and AI data centers within regional areas.

Under the plan, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are set to invest a combined total of 800 trillion won (approximately $522 billion). This figure represents the largest investment ever planned for the Gwangju and Honam region. Presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik confirmed the selection and emphasized the president's commitment to the project, announcing that monthly meetings will be held to personally monitor its progress.
