The quick recovery of key defender Kim Tae-hyeon significantly strengthens South Korea's lineup for their crucial World Cup match against Mexico, improving their chances of advancing from the group stage.
South Korea received positive news regarding injured players ahead of their second FIFA World Cup match. Defender Kim Tae-hyeon, who suffered an ankle injury during training, is expected to be available for the upcoming game against Mexico. Initially, there were concerns that the injury might sideline him for the entire group stage.
Team doctor Song Jun-seob stated that an MRI confirmed a ligament tear, but subsequent evaluations showed it was an average sprain. This less severe diagnosis means Kim, one of South Korea's two left-footed center backs, could play as early as next Thursday.
In a separate injury update, midfielder Bae Jun-ho is also on the mend from a more severe ankle sprain sustained on May 30. Doctors are taking a conservative approach with Bae, as another injury would rule him out of the tournament.
South Korea, who beat Czechia 2-1 in their opening match, will face co-host Mexico at Estadio Guadalajara. Mexico opened their tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa.
