Satya Nadella warns companies without own AI models may not survive

Despite Microsoft's significant investments in AI leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic, Nadella's advice suggests a strategic move to benefit Microsoft's cloud business by selling alternative infrastructure. The warning aligns with a growing trend where enterprises seek diverse, often cheaper, open-weight models that can be fine-tuned and run on their own hardware, necessitating tools to manage multiple models and independent coding agents.

Nadella also highlighted the risk of AI labs copying and competing with businesses that share sensitive internal data, a concern echoed by startup investors. However, he differentiated this advice for businesses from consumer use, where sharing data is seen as a trade-off for free services.
