Chinese memory chip manufacturers ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC) are experiencing a significant surge in demand and pricing power, driven by the global buildout of AI data centers. This newfound clout allows them to challenge established players like Samsung and SK Hynix, and even dictate terms to domestic giants like Huawei, which has reportedly faced price increases and operational disruptions.
CXMT, now the world's fourth-largest memory chip maker, has secured a multi-billion dollar five-year agreement with ByteDance, TikTok's parent company. Both CXMT and YMTC, supported by substantial government funding and strategic importance to Beijing's technological self-reliance goals, are preparing for blockbuster IPOs. CXMT's revenue increased by 719% in the first quarter, and it plans to more than double its production capacity, potentially surpassing Micron by 2030.
However, this rise is attracting increased scrutiny from the United States. The Pentagon has designated both firms as Chinese military companies, and YMTC is already on the U.S. Entity List, restricting its access to U.S. technology. While Apple has advocated for CXMT, Congress is debating further restrictions. The companies' reliance on ASML's deep ultraviolet lithography machines, and the U.S. pressure on the Netherlands to limit sales of advanced equipment, pose significant challenges. Furthermore, while CXMT produces high-bandwidth memory crucial for AI, it remains several years behind its rivals in technological advancement.
