The scale of Russian aerial attacks highlights the ongoing intensity of the conflict and Ukraine's critical need for enhanced air defense capabilities to protect its civilian population.
Russian forces launched approximately 1,920 strike drones against Ukraine over the past week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced. In addition to the drones, Russia deployed 1,790 guided aerial bombs and 17 missiles of various types. Zelensky emphasized the urgent need to enhance countermeasures and secure international support, particularly for air defense and long-range capabilities, during upcoming G7, EU, and NATO summits. He also called for expanded cooperation on drone defense and increased sanctions pressure on Russia. The report comes as May was identified as the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, with over 2,000 casualties, according to the U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission. Ukraine continues to face a significant shortage of anti-ballistic defense systems, with PAC-3 Patriot interceptor missiles being the most effective against Russian ballistic missiles, though Ukraine has noted a critical shortage of these U.S.-made systems.
