Chris Larsen, cofounder and executive chairman of Ripple, has proposed that California should permit the sale of certain Chinese electric vehicles to low-income residents. During an interview on the podcast "On with Kara Swisher," Larsen suggested that vehicles like the $10,000 BYD Seagull could be made available to income-qualified buyers.
Larsen's proposal directly challenges the stance of the broader U.S. auto industry. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group representing major automakers, recently urged Congress to ban Chinese vehicles, software, and hardware, citing economic and national-security risks associated with subsidized Chinese technology.
However, Larsen argued that Chinese EVs could provide a crucial solution to the affordability crisis in the U.S. auto market. With the average price of a new vehicle exceeding $50,000 and gas prices remaining high, particularly in California due to significant excise taxes, Larsen believes accessible Chinese EVs are necessary. He specifically called the California gas tax "the most regressive tax in the world that's hurting the guy who can't afford to live in Silicon Valley."
