Putin links election turnout to support for Ukraine military campaign

President Vladimir Putin stated on Wednesday that the high turnout in Russia's recent parliamentary election demonstrated that citizens support the country's military operations in Ukraine and the authorities' efforts to safeguard national security. The election, which took place from September 18 to 20, was framed by Putin as a referendum on his administration's handling of the war in Ukraine and his commitment to achieving key military objectives.

Preliminary results released on Monday indicated that the United Russia party, which supports Putin, maintained its substantial majority in the national parliament. This outcome occurred within a tightly controlled political environment that largely excluded candidates who opposed the conflict. The Central Electoral Commission announced a turnout of 59.3%, which TASS, a state news agency, noted was higher than in most previous elections for the State Duma, the lower house of parliament.

In his first public comments on the results, Putin remarked, "Such a high, even record, number of people who came out and voted shows that the people of Russia support our efforts aimed at strengthening the country." He also directly addressed soldiers on the front lines during a televised speech, stating, "This vote is for you. People believe in you, believe in our victory, believe in your courage, in your heroism."

Near-complete results showed United Russia is set to control 355 seats, or nearly 80% of the 450 seats in the Duma, a record number, after winning over 57% of the votes.
