Putin, Kim coordinate regional security, KCNA reports

Russian President Vladimir Putin has informed North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that the two nations are cooperating on regional security, according to North Korea's state media KCNA. Kim Jong-un, meanwhile, paid tribute to Soviet soldiers who fought against Japan during World War II, marking Korea's liberation day and emphasizing the strengthening of ties with Russia.

Kim visited the Liberation Tower in Pyongyang on Friday, ahead of the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule. He laid a wreath and stated that the "great friendship and unity" between North Korea and Russia would be carried forward generation after generation. This visit marked the third time Kim has visited the tower on Liberation Day since the two countries established a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024, which has facilitated North Korea's military support for Russia in its war against Ukraine.

Putin sent a congratulatory message on Saturday, noting that Russia and North Korea are actively cooperating across various sectors and are making joint efforts to ensure regional security and stability. He described their "militant friendship and mutual assistance" as having elevated bilateral ties to an "unprecedentedly high level of comprehensive strategic partnership." Putin also expressed confidence in continuing constructive joint undertakings on bilateral and international issues, seemingly referencing the growing military cooperation between the two countries.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also extended greetings to Kim. These exchanges and Kim's visit highlight the deepening relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang, particularly their expanding military cooperation, which has raised international concerns regarding North Korea's support for Russia's war in Ukraine.
