A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Indonesia in the Flores region, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, had its epicenter 68km north-northwest of the city of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province. Indonesia's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency issued a tsunami warning, advising residents along affected coastlines to move to higher ground and stay away from beaches and riverbanks. The agency is closely monitoring coastal tide gauges. Australia's tsunami warning centre stated that the earthquake would pose no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands, or territories. Indonesia is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," making it prone to seismic and volcanic activity.
