A new POLITICO Poll indicates a significant shift in public perception, with a majority of Americans now viewing top tech CEOs as conservative, regardless of their own political affiliation. This perception extends to the belief that the tech industry is a major financial supporter of the Republican Party.
The poll, conducted by PF Global, surveyed views on prominent tech figures like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, and Dario Amodei. While their actual political donations and affiliations vary, the public largely sees them as holding similar, predominantly Republican, political leanings. Elon Musk was identified as Republican by 59% of respondents, while Bill Gates was the only figure more Americans identified as a Democrat.
This perception could pose challenges for both Republicans seeking to distance themselves from Big Tech backlash and for the tech companies themselves, as political parties may leverage these views. A Navigator Research report also highlighted that technology companies, including AI and social media firms, are viewed negatively in battleground states, with CEOs seen as corrupt elites manipulating politics for profit. Data centers also face unfavorable views, with doubts about their job-creation promises.
