One Nation's Warren Pickering admits to past drug use, denies child endangerment claims

Accompanied by One Nation's national director James Ashby and his daughter and stepson, Pickering stated he was "no angel" as a young man but emphasized he was never a drug addict. He detailed his past use of ecstasy, speed, and marijuana but firmly denied using or smoking ice while his children were present. Pickering acknowledged that his past actions, including drink driving, "hurt people I loved" and stated he would live with that consequence forever.

Pickering explained that he "changed his life dramatically" for his family, became clean, and joined the Australian Defence Force, which he credited with providing him purpose and inspiring his entry into politics. James Ashby also addressed a handwritten note published by The Australian, which referenced "sexual deviance," clarifying it pertained to the couple's open relationship and Pickering's exploration of his sexuality.

Pickering indicated he is working with lawyers to have the stories removed and is seeking advice on potential defamation action. Reporters from The Australian were permitted to attend the press conference, but those from Guardian Australia and the ABC were asked to leave by Ashby.
