Republicans aim to highlight policy contrasts at convention

Rep. Mark Harris (R-N.C.) articulated the core message, stating that "Politics 101 is just telling folks what you’re going to do, and then come to Washington and do it, and then go back and tell them what you did." He cited securing the border and making tax cuts permanent as key accomplishments aligned with Trump's agenda, also mentioning a shift towards "peace through strength" despite a "detour" in Iran.

The convention is intended to focus on the legislative record Trump will promote, juxtaposed against a Democratic Party that Republicans argue has become too progressive, especially with the success of democratic socialist candidates in primaries. Rep. Brian Jack (R-Ga.), a deputy chair of the House GOP campaign arm, stated that the event would "display a contrast that we’ve never seen before in politics," pitting Republicans' "commonsense ideas" against Democrats being "drawn to the absolute most extreme left of their party."

RNC national press secretary Natalie Baldassarre affirmed this strategy, saying the convention would "put front and center Democrats’ desire to abolish police and prisons, raise costs, and strip away our freedoms," while promoting "Republicans’ historic achievements." Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) echoed concerns about the Democratic Party's direction, calling it "a turn for the worse."

Despite the convention's focus, a number of Republican members, including LaLota, will not be attending the event, which has a minimum cost of $25,000 for lawmakers. However, these absent members still have a vested interest in the convention's success and the impression it leaves on voters.
