China's Xi backs Myanmar's president in Beijing talks

During the visit, Xi Jinping endorsed Min Aung Hlaing's political leadership and pledged to strengthen bilateral ties, carry forward friendship, and deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation. The two leaders also witnessed the signing of 18 memorandums for cooperation covering areas including cross-border transportation, free trade, assistance in natural disasters, health, and media.

China remains one of the most important foreign partners of Myanmar's military, which seized power in February 2021. Beijing has invested in Belt and Road Initiative projects in Myanmar, including an oil and gas pipeline and planned infrastructure like a deep-sea port. China's foreign ministry has stated its support for Myanmar in unifying domestic political forces and restoring stability.

This meeting is Min Aung Hlaing's second with Xi in less than a year, following his attendance at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit last August. Analysts suggest these visits indicate a closer relationship with Beijing and a boost to his international acceptance, especially as China perceives a retreat of Western influence from Myanmar.
