MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated that the San Francisco Giants mishandled communication regarding their annual Pride Night, leading to confusion among players about wearing themed caps. In a letter to Senator Josh Hawley, Manfred explained that the Giants failed to properly inform their players that they had the option to decline wearing the rainbow-themed caps.
This lack of clarity resulted in some Giants players, including pitcher Landen Roupp, adding Bible verses to their caps, which is a violation of league policy. Hawley had previously written to Manfred expressing concern over the league's warning to the players, deeming it "dubious" given MLB's promotion of Pride-themed attire.
Manfred clarified that a league policy adopted in 2023 prohibits clubs from using special uniforms or equipment for celebration days, with very limited exceptions. However, the Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, teams with significant LGBTQ+ communities, were granted an exemption for Pride Night. This exemption stipulated that no players or staff would be required to wear the Pride emblems, and that teams must ensure player comfort with the apparel.
Manfred acknowledged in his letter that the Giants' communication was "inadequate and not clear," causing some players to add messages to their hats. He added that the league issued a routine warning about the uniform policy violation after the game concluded, but only before becoming aware of the Giants' communication lapse. Manfred confirmed that the players involved were neither fined nor disciplined, and will not be.
