This collaboration signifies a major investment in India's AI infrastructure, positioning the country as a key player in the global AI landscape and supporting the development of next-generation AI services.
Meta Platforms and Reliance Industries are deepening their collaboration by constructing an AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This initiative represents a significant expansion of their partnership, moving beyond digital connectivity and commerce to focus on the foundational infrastructure for artificial intelligence in India.
The purpose-built facility will have an initial capacity of 168 MW, with Meta securing a lease agreement and planning for future expansion. This marks Meta's first AI-focused data centre in India, highlighting the country's increasing importance in the company's global infrastructure strategy. The Jamnagar location was chosen for its access to energy resources and supporting infrastructure, and the facility is specifically designed to handle high-density AI workloads.
Sustainability is a core component of the project, with the data centre planned to use desalinated seawater for cooling. Meta is also committed to powering its operations with 100% clean energy, having separately contracted nearly 1 GW of renewable energy capacity through partnerships with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy.
This alliance underscores India's ambition to become a global hub for AI infrastructure, not just a consumer market. The growing demand for computing power worldwide makes this collaboration a key development in the ongoing digital transformation and the infrastructure required for the AI era.
