Abdalmasih Hanoun will face trial within the next year at the Haute-Savoie Assize Court for the attempted murder of 13 people, including a British toddler, following a knife attack in a park in Annecy, France, in June 2023. The charges also include violence with a weapon against two victims and armed resistance.
French prosecutors stated that Hanoun is accused of stabbing a three-year-old British girl, identified locally as Ettie, during the alleged rampage. Ettie suffered a single stab wound, and her condition was not considered life-threatening. She was one of four children, aged between 22 months and three years, who were wounded in the incident. Two adults were also injured but were later reported to be out of danger.
A panel of experts assessed Hanoun's mental state and concluded that he was not suffering from a psychological or neuropsychological disorder that would abolish his discernment or ability to control his actions at the time of the events. This finding provides grounds for the indictment.
The decision to proceed with the trial can be appealed at the French Court of Cassation. Following the attack, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte visited the injured children and other victims in the hospital.
