French President Emmanuel Macron has invited Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to next week’s G7 leaders’ summit. The invitations were confirmed by government officials and individuals briefed on the plans. Al Thani has accepted the invitation, while it remains unclear if Prince Mohammed will attend. The two Gulf leaders were asked to join talks aimed at securing and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic, amid renewed fears of hostilities between Israel and Iran. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will also attend the summit as a partner nation. The G7 summit, set to take place at the lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains, is expected to be dominated by international crises, including the conflict in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine. France and the U.K. are leading efforts for a maritime mission to protect the Strait of Hormuz once the current fighting concludes.
