Leaders at the upcoming G7 Summit in Evian, France, are set to endorse multiple policy declarations on specific issues rather than a single overarching joint statement. These declarations will address topics such as critical minerals, research to combat cancer, online child protection, international solidarity, social impact investment, and investment de-risking in fragile countries. Discussions on more sensitive geopolitical matters, including global imbalances, the crisis in the Middle East, the blockade of the Hormuz Strait, and the war in Ukraine, will be contained within a separate statement issued by the French presidency.
This approach mirrors a strategy adopted by the Canadian presidency in the previous year. An official from the French presidency's office stated that the summit is already considered a success, highlighting France's role in initiating a dialogue with Chinese authorities and G7 members on addressing global economic imbalances. French President Emmanuel Macron convened an online meeting with representatives from G7 countries, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as well as officials from non-G7 nations like Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing. During this call, participants concurred on the necessity of resolving global imbalances and committed to continuing these discussions at the G20 level, with support from the International Monetary Fund.
