LayerZero, a blockchain infrastructure company, has announced the launch of ATLAS, its new settlement and trading engine. Designed to operate behind the scenes for exchanges, ATLAS aims to provide core functionalities such as matching, clearing, settlement, and risk management, allowing trading venues to focus on their user interfaces and customer relationships.
ATLAS will be available in two versions: one tailored for crypto applications and prediction markets, and another for firms requiring custom rule enforcement. The engine is envisioned to support a wide range of markets, including spot and perpetual futures for cryptocurrencies, as well as stocks, bonds, and commodities. LayerZero's argument is that existing exchange rails often lead to competition between the infrastructure provider and the trading venue itself, deterring institutional adoption.
The announcement saw LayerZero's native token, ZRO, experience a price surge of over 10%, with some reports indicating a jump of more than 20%. This rise is attributed to the token's integration into ATLAS, where staking offers fee rebates ranging from 20% to 65%. After these rebates, 75% of the remaining fees are used to buy and burn ZRO, while the other 25% goes to the market creator, effectively linking the token's value to trading volume.
This development comes at a crucial time for LayerZero, following a period of significant outflows from its ecosystem, including a $292 million exploit on the Kelp DAO bridge and the departure of protocols like BitGo and Wyoming's state stablecoin, totaling approximately $15 billion. The introduction of ATLAS is seen as an effort to regain momentum and build infrastructure for anticipated growth in areas like perpetuals, tokenized assets, and real-world assets (RWAs).
