Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, has plummeted to its lowest water level since it was filled approximately 90 years ago, underscoring the severe crisis affecting the Colorado River system. Federal data shows water levels at the reservoir, located on the Arizona-Nevada border, reached 1,040.4 feet above sea level on Friday, surpassing the previous record set in July 2022.
J.B. Hamby, chairman of the Colorado River Board of California, emphasized the critical nature of the situation, noting that three-quarters of the Colorado River Basin's population, around 30 million people, are directly impacted by the risks to Lake Mead. He stressed the necessity for states utilizing Colorado River water to reduce their consumption.
The region is grappling with a prolonged drought and dry conditions, exacerbated by the worst snowpack on record for the Colorado River Basin. This has placed immense stress on farmers, industries, wildlife, and hydropower producers, as well as the 40 million people across seven U.S. states, tribal nations, and Mexico who depend on the river.
Years of overuse, coupled with drought and rising temperatures, have severely depleted both Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the nation's second-largest reservoir. Federal officials recently announced a short-term proposal to mitigate the crisis after states failed to agree on long-term water management. The plan suggests that Lower Basin states—Arizona, California, and Nevada—reduce their water intake, with flexibility for deeper cuts during drier periods.
In a move to protect hydropower generation, federal officials stated they will not release cooler water from Lake Powell to support the endangered humpback chub fish. Modeling indicates that Lake Mead's water level is expected to continue declining for the remainder of the year.
