Johnson meets Trump as surveillance law renewal faces hurdles

President Trump has formally requested a short-term extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) from Congress. This move seeks to provide additional time for the nomination and confirmation of a permanent Director of National Intelligence (DNI), as the current law is set to expire on June 12.

The request comes amid significant opposition to the potential appointment of Bill Pulte as the interim intelligence chief. Democrats, and some Republicans, have voiced concerns over Pulte's lack of experience in intelligence matters and his controversial directives, including alleged efforts to send criminal referrals targeting political opponents to the Justice Department. Democrats have indicated they would not support the renewal of FISA if Pulte remains in the acting DNI role.

Trump has accused Democrats of leveraging national security issues for unrelated political gains, emphasizing the importance of FISA 702 for national security, particularly during upcoming events like the World Cup and America250 celebrations. While Trump is reportedly interviewing candidates for a permanent DNI position, he has maintained his choice for Pulte to serve on a temporary basis, a role that does not require Senate confirmation. Senate Majority John Thune has suggested that replacing Pulte with a confirmed nominee could unlock the necessary support for FISA's renewal.
