Yoho Brewing Co., a craft beer producer based in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, has introduced the "Wobbly Beer Glass by Yona Yona Ale" as part of an initiative to encourage responsible drinking. The U-shaped glass is divided into two sections, one for beer and one for water, and is designed to tilt and potentially spill if a drinker consumes only beer without adequately balancing it with water. This design aims to prevent excessive alcohol consumption and dehydration.
The glass has been on sale since August, coinciding with growing public awareness regarding responsible alcohol consumption. The company developed seven prototypes over approximately eight months to refine the design and prevent spills. Each section of the glass has a capacity of 270 milliliters, and it becomes unstable when the ratio of beer to water consumption exceeds 1:2.
Kyoko Kitano, the employee who led the glass's development, was inspired by conversations about people forgetting to drink water while socializing. She expressed a desire for the glass to help promote healthier drinking habits. Yoho Brewing has a history of promoting moderate alcohol consumption, having produced lower-alcohol beers and limited alcohol service hours at events since 2015.
A survey conducted by the company revealed that over 70% of regular drinkers are aware of the risk of alcohol-induced dehydration and recognize drinking water as a practice for responsible drinking. However, a similar percentage felt they did not consume enough water while drinking alcohol, with the primary reason being difficulty in keeping track of water intake amidst drinking. The company aims to address this gap with its innovative glass design.
