The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appointed Silvana Tenreyro as its new chief economist and head of research, effective August 10. Tenreyro, a professor at the London School of Economics, previously served as an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from 2017 to 2023. She also held positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Bank of Mauritius.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva highlighted Tenreyro's "intellectual leadership and policy experience" as vital for the fund's work during a period of global economic transformation and uncertainty. The chief economist plays a crucial role in shaping the IMF's global economic outlook and policy advice.
In a separate development, Georgieva is scheduled to visit Argentina at the end of July. This visit will be her first to the country in her current role, and she is expected to meet with President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo. Argentina is currently focused on meeting its debt obligations through 2027 with multilateral loans and other financing measures, avoiding international bond markets for now.
