Hong Kong's Development Bureau is launching a 12-month trial to assess the capabilities of heavy-lift drones, each weighing close to 150kg, for use in public projects. The initiative, part of a regulatory sandbox aimed at fostering the city's 'low-altitude economy,' will test whether these drones can transport construction materials like cement and manhole covers.
The bureau is collaborating with two companies for the pilot program, which will take place across up to six real-world sites and facilities. Beyond construction, potential applications include clearing drains and cleaning building facades. A bureau spokesman stated the goal is to safely iterate, validate, and apply this emerging technology, identifying and addressing challenges to enhance operational safety, simplify procedures, and improve emergency response capabilities.
The regulatory sandbox, established in November of the previous year, provides a controlled environment for testing new technologies like these advanced drones.
