The sale of a unique prize island highlights the long-term realities of property ownership, even for unusual acquisitions, and offers a rare opportunity to purchase a Canadian island retreat.
A German man, Matthias R., who won a private island in Nova Scotia, Canada, as a prize in a 2005 Haribo competition, is now selling the property for C$348,000 (approximately 220,000 euros). The island, marketed as "Back Lake Islands," spans about 6.5 hectares and includes a log cabin with two bedrooms, a bathroom, solar panels, a water pump, and a composting toilet. The property also features adjacent wetlands and is a short boat ride from the town of Shelburne. Matthias R. stated that the ongoing upkeep and the long travel time for short holidays prompted his decision to sell the retreat, which was initially part of a large promotional campaign by Haribo.
