Gemini's Singapore entity has obtained a Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore, allowing it to offer digital payment token and cross-border money transfer services without transaction volume limits.
The license allows Gemini to operate more broadly within Singapore's financial ecosystem, removing transaction volume caps and solidifying its position in a key Asian market, potentially paving the way for expanded services and client acquisition.
Crypto exchange Gemini has officially received a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), marking the culmination of an approval process that began nearly two years ago. The license was awarded to Gemini Digital Payments Singapore, the company's local entity.
With this MPI license, Gemini is authorized to offer digital payment token services and cross-border money transfers. Unlike standard payment institutions, MPI license holders are not subject to transaction-volume limits, though MAS indicated they face more extensive regulatory oversight due to their operational scale and associated risks.
Gemini President and co-founder Cameron Winklevoss stated that the exchange has been serving customers in Singapore since 2020. CEO Tyler Winklevoss highlighted Singapore's strategic importance as a hub for both retail and institutional clients. Gemini's current offerings in Singapore include spot crypto trading, digital asset custody, and over-the-counter services.
The full license follows an in-principle approval granted by MAS in October 2024. In April 2025, Gemini transferred its Singaporean customers from Gemini Trust Company to its locally incorporated entity as it pursued final regulatory approval.
