Dozens of leading female writers are uniting to stage an ambitious theatrical event in a financial office in the City of London to express their anger over the Jeffrey Epstein files and honour his victims. Titled 'All the Rage,' the large-scale performance will be staged in 15 rooms of a former insurance building from Thursday.
Rebecca Lenkiewicz, who set up the project, described the space as a "huge office that was all about men and money," which they have now filled with "a kind of female anarchy." Among the more than 70 UK-based playwrights taking part are Lucy Kirkwood, Penelope Skinner, Timberlake Wertenbaker, and Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti. Each has written short scripts and texts for performances and installations inspired by the revelations from the files relating to financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and the themes of power, abuse, and exploitation.
Lenkiewicz has written a poem in response to the memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who detailed her abuse by Epstein and accused Prince Andrew. Lenkiewicz stated she was "so angry" about the perceived lack of media coverage for victims and survivors, aiming to provide a "female perspective." She added that the project seeks to shift shame to perpetrators and combat the "institutional silence" that allows abusers to continue.
Penelope Skinner noted that many participating writers likely have personal experiences relevant to the event's themes. Her contribution was inspired by a photograph from the Epstein files showing Prince Andrew with an unidentified woman. Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti also felt that female voices were drowned out in the coverage of the files, and described the event as a "cauldron of creativity" focused on rage, power, connection, solidarity, love, and freedom.
'All the Rage' is scheduled to run at Theatre Deli, Leadenhall Street, London, from Thursday, June 11 to Saturday, June 13.
