Farmers Urge Ban on Disposable Barbecues Amid Wildfire Concerns

Farmers, landowners, and firefighters in England and Wales are urging a ban on disposable barbecues due to the escalating risk of wildfires. The current dry weather conditions, exacerbated by recent heatwaves and drought, have made vegetation highly flammable. This situation has already led to significant losses for farmers, including destroyed crops, damaged infrastructure, and risks to livestock. Wildfires have impacted vast areas across the UK this year, with over 20,000 hectares estimated to have burned.

Concerns have been raised about the ease with which disposable barbecues can ignite fires, whether through carelessness or deliberate action. While many major supermarkets have ceased selling these items, they are still accessible through smaller retailers and online platforms. Firefighters and political figures, including the Liberal Democrats and several Labour MPs, support the call for a ban.

Beyond restricting barbecues, suggestions include increasing grazing in moorland areas to reduce vegetation, though conservationists express caution about over-grazing in sensitive habitats. Experts have also refuted claims that rewilding increases wildfire risk, with some, like Ben Goldsmith, highlighting how reintroducing species like beavers can improve water retention and mitigate drought impacts. The Country Land and Business Association has proposed lifting the ban on controlled burning, arguing it is an effective method for clearing excess vegetation that fuels wildfires, provided it is conducted properly.
