The shooting of Corey Ruiz by Madison police has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, highlighting concerns about police use of force and the lack of body-worn camera footage in the city. The family's pursuit of justice, amplified by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, underscores the ongoing debate surrounding police conduct and transparency.
The family of Corey Ruiz, who was shot and killed by Madison police on Wednesday, has publicly stated that he was an exceptional man who loved his daughter and family. His mother, Elsa Ruiz, expressed her grief and disbelief, stating he did not deserve to be killed. The family made their first public statement at a news conference Thursday, accompanied by civil rights attorney Ben Crump. Crump characterized the shooting as an unjustified "execution" and emphasized the need for accountability when excessive force is used. Police reported that Ruiz pulled a knife during a struggle with four officers, leading to one officer firing the fatal shots. All four officers have been placed on administrative leave pending investigations by the state and the city's independent police monitor. The incident was captured on cellphone video, which was widely shared online. However, Madison Police Chief John Patterson noted that the video does not provide the officers' perspective. Notably, Madison is one of the few cities of its size that does not mandate body-worn cameras for its police officers.
