ExxonMobil and Angola's National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) confirmed a new oil discovery at the Vicango Este-01 well in the deepwater Block 15, marking the block's 20th find since production began. The well, located approximately 370 kilometers northwest of Luanda, was drilled to a depth of 940 meters and encountered 25 meters of high-quality, hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone.
Block 15 has been a significant contributor to Angola's oil output, having produced more than 2.7 billion barrels over its 30-year operational history. Brian Unietis, chief executive of ExxonMobil Angola, highlighted that new discoveries enhance the value of existing infrastructure within the block.
This discovery follows a recent announcement by Chevron regarding a find at its 105-4X well in the adjacent Block 0. Angola, a major crude producer in Sub-Saharan Africa, has been implementing new fiscal terms and exploration incentives to revitalize drilling activities in both mature and unexplored areas, with the Vicango Este-01 well being a result of these efforts. The country's national oil output has stabilized around 1.1 million barrels per day.
